Che Guevara, born Ernesto Guevara de la Serna on June 14, 1928, in Argentina, was a Marxist revolutionary and key figure of the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro. Emerging as a symbol of anti-imperialism and rebellion, Che became known for his guerrilla warfare tactics and passionate advocacy for socialist principles. His iconic image, captured by photographer Alberto Korda, adorns countless posters and t-shirts worldwide, symbolizing youthful idealism and defiance against oppression.
Che’s journey as a revolutionary began with his motorbike trip across South America, which exposed him to the poverty and injustices faced by the continent’s people. This experience fueled his desire to combat social inequality and class struggle. Joining forces with Castro, Che played a crucial role in overthrowing the U.S.-backed Batista regime in Cuba in 1959. He held various positions in the Cuban government, including heading the National Bank and Ministry of Industries, where he implemented land reforms and promoted industrialization.

Beyond Cuba, Che continued his revolutionary efforts by supporting insurgencies in other Latin American countries, Africa, and even the Congo. He believed in the global struggle against imperialism and capitalism, advocating for armed struggle as a means to achieve revolutionary change. Che’s writings, such as “Guerilla Warfare” and “The Motorcycle Diaries,” offer insights into his revolutionary ideology and tactics.

Che Guevara’s legacy remains complex, with passionate supporters hailing him as a hero of the oppressed and fierce critic of capitalist exploitation. However, his critics point to his roles in summary executions and harsh tactics during the Cuban Revolution as evidence of his authoritarian tendencies. Despite his death in Bolivia in 1967, Che’s revolutionary spirit lives on, inspiring activists and revolutionaries globally to challenge injustice and fight for a more equitable world.
